When you arrive in class, hand out the bingo cards face down, and tell the students it is their test paper. When they turn it out, they are usually surprised that it isn't like the normal test paper. Tell them to start the spelling test, filling in words randomly in the blank squares until the bingo card is completely filled.

Afterwords, finish the test and start playing bingo using vocabulary from the chapter. If someone gets bingo, check their spelling. If they get it right, give out a small prize. If not, keep playing until someone gets it.

At the end of the class, you can collect the cards and grade them as a spelling quiz, if you like.

One thing to keep in mind is that the time you spend on the quiz could vary greatly, depending on whether you simply call out vocabulary words, ie "Vocab Word 1", or go according to BINGO protocol, ie "N-Vocab Word 1". I tried this using the latter version, and in 45 minutes of playing, we had only 2 students get BINGO, one of whom didn't spell his words properly. Even so, kids were generally attentive during this time, so I'd label it a pretty successful time-waster.]]></c:value>

<c:lesson> <c:value><![CDATA[This was shared with me a few months ago by a fellow teacher. I wrote this as a lesson for young learners, but I've used it with lower-level middle school and high-school students, and they generally loved it.

Basically, you just have them make a simple 8 page comic book which utilizes basic English. The language doesn't have to be too complex, but you should state that it should tell a story, and that they need to write at least one full sentence on each page.

If you want them to work harder, it is usually good to bring in some completed examples done by other students. The better the example, the harder the students will work.

Steps:
1. Take a sheet of A4 paper and fold it into 8ths
2. Open it back up, then fold it in half horizontally, which should show a half sheet of paper with 4 squares, 2 on each row.
3. Cut a slit in the paper from the middle to the 2nd row.
4. Open it back up. Your paper should look a bit like an "O"
5. Fold the paper in half vertically.
6. Fold out the middle sections of the paper so that it looks like an "X".
7. Fold it all together, and you have your comic book
8. Now you are done. Let the kids go to town.

I've included a photo below to help you understand my instructions. Hope it works out for you.
